Also known as "The Response", this cenotaph symbolizes the sacrifice of all Canadian Armed Forces personnel who have served Canada in time of war in the cause of peace and freedom. The national Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 11 takes place on this site.
On October 22, 2014, a Canadian soldier, Cpl Nathan Cirillo, was killed by a gunman while performing the duties of a sentry at the National War Memorial. At the age of 24, he was a reservist based out of Hamilton, ON.
