This afternoon, I visited different places...
Duddell Street Steps & Gas Lamps
Central Station MTR
The stone steps on Duddell Street (都爹利街) were built between 1875 and 1889. The last four gas lamps in Hong Kong are situated at the top and at the foot of the Steps. The Duddell Street Steps are located perpendicular to Ice House Street. Before the reclamation, it used to be water at the bottom of the steps.
Prior to 1874, sailing ships imported ice from the Tudor Ice Company, in America. They anchored near the Ice House Lane. The ice was stored in the government's Ice Depot. Therefore, the Ice House Street was named accordingly. In 1874, 2 Scotchmen built 2 damp-air machines to produce ice in Hong Kong. In 1879, Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co. bought these 2 apparatuses and formed the Hong Kong Ice Company. The factory was erected in East Point, Causeway Bay. Later, 3 amonia compression machines replaced the 2 damp-air machines. The ice produced was carted to town and shipped by boat. In 1884, the Hong Kong Ice Company Ltd purchased the ice house from the government and transformed it into office and ice depot. In 1900, the company established many insulated cold stores to keep the meat and butter from Australia. The food was then supplies to the British naval and military forces.
