Basically, you do not need to take any tram/bus inside Amsterdam; each location is walking distance. Else, rent a bicycle! To travel between Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and the city, simply take Connexxion Bus 197.
I lived in the neighborhood of Oud-West (Old-West), just besides downtown. Very nice area. Near Vondelpark, Heineken Experience, Leidseplein, Museumplein, Anne Frank Huis, etc.
What I enjoy the most in Amsterdam City is people relaxing on their boats in the canals.
