2015 - Hong Kong (XI)

DAY 21 - May 30, 2015 - Buttered Pineapple Bun

Guong Shing Ice Cafe 廣成冰室
10 San Shing Ave / 新成路10號
Sheung Shui, N.T. / 上水石湖墟

My last breakfast in HK was a typical breakfast at a Hong Kong style Tea Restaurant. Old cha-chaan-teng food. Old school decor. Typical breakfast is a combo of a buttered pineapple bun and a bowl of beef macaroni with a Hong Kong style milk tea. If you pass 10 o'clock, there is a long queue. I love my experience!

[Menu is written on the mirror like the old days]

[波蘿油 Real buttered pineapple bun. Yes, a slice of butter!]

Fa Pai (花牌)

Behind me are giant flower plaques mounted on bamboo scaffolds called "Fa Pai". Usually placed at the entrances to venues, Fa Pai is a local traditional way of greeting an grand opening of a shop or celebrating a cultural festival such as Cheung Chau Bun Festival. The flower plaques can be as big as a cinema billboard measuring a height of 7 metres and a width of 3 metres. In order to catch the attention of passers-by, they are usually red, the traditional color for celebrations and beautified with neatly handwritten couplets and paintings of auspicious animals. It takes about 2 weeks to create a Fa Pai. Today, it is rare to see these flower plaques in the city. There are less and less craftsmen.

Market

The market opens early in the morning and closes at 10 A.M. Local people sell whatever they crop at home.

[Fishes for lunch]

Goodbye HK!

[Thank you Yadi for the homemade pork chop sandwich. Delicious!]
